Giving Back to the Community
Owner and Chief Instructor Erik Neill feels fortunate and grateful for the community support he received while growing up and attending school in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area. Now, as a father and business owner, he realizes the importance of accepting responsibility to provide for the communities in which we live.
With this in mind, along with the tenets of Taekwondo such as courtesy and integrity, Master Neill decided to use his unique position in the community for its benefit. Below you will find some information about some of the charities that Neill's Family Taekwondo and Fitness is involved with, and information on what you can do to help.
There have been countless studies showing that hungry students are more distracted and less successful in school than their peers. Local public schools such as the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School system and Durham Public School system provide a reduced-lunch program for students whose families cannot easily afford the cost of a daily school lunch. However, sometimes that is not enough and balances on the reduced-lunch program can become past-due and pile up, unpaid.
After hearing about a "lunch angel" in Houston, Texas who paid off outstanding accounts in his community, Master Neill and Kyle Newman, a friend from another local business, teamed up to do the same for their communities. Beginning in 2014 and continuing the tradition subsequently, Neill's Family Taekwondo and Fitness and Craige Motor Co. have started their own "Lunch Angels" program, paying off nearly $2,000 in past-due lunches. Their efforts have gained some attention and other local businesses have begun to offer their help. Their reach has even extended to other states.
If you would like to help ensure adequate nutrition for our community's school children, please consider donating food or money to one or more of the other nutrition-related charities that Neill's Family Taekwondo and Fitness works with: TABLE and/or the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. Learn more about Lunch Angels NC.
Neill's Family Taekwondo and Fitness is proud to collect food for the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. Sadly, food insecurity remains a serious problem in central and eastern North Carolina. In this area, more than 651,000 people struggle to access nutritious and adequate amounts of food necessary for an active and healthy life. 1 in 3 of the people served by the Food Bank's network are children, and another 8 percent are elderly.
In fiscal year 2013-2014, the Food Bank distributed more than 53 million pounds of food and non-food essentials.
Master Neill and Neill's Family Taekwondo has raised in excess of 1,000 pounds of food over the years for different charities and is now proud to have a donation station within the academy for the Food Bank. Learn more about the most-needed items and please consider helping by donating food at the academy. Thank you so much!
Barth Syndrome is an ultra-rare disease which affects fewer than 200 individuals worldwide. In 2014, Neill's Family Taekwondo and Fitness member Michael Neece wanted to find a way to honor his friends, help raise funds for a cure for Barth Syndrome, and take on a difficult challenge for a martial artist. He accomplished all of these things when he created the Breaking Barth Syndrome fundraising event and broke 500 wooden boards in just a couple of hours, raising $2,500 for the Barth Syndrome Foundation.
In 2016, Mr. Neece and Neill's Family Taekwondo and Fitness became even more ambitious with a plan to break more boards, using more breakers! On Saturday, July 25, 2015, Neill's Family Taekwondo and Fitness members and friends broke over 1,000 pine boards and successfully raised over $2,000 for the Barth Syndrome Foundation. Stay tuned for further events!
